Taxonomy and names

The archive incorporates taxonomic and nomenclatural data from the Catalogue of Life. These records provide the foundation for scientific names, taxonomic placement, accepted names and synonym relationships represented in the catalogue.

Biological observations

Biological trait observations are incorporated from AnimalTraits and EltonTraits datasets. The available observations vary by species and trait; a missing value should not be interpreted as evidence that a species lacks that characteristic.

Tracing individual records

Where provenance information is available, an observation may include its source, source-record identifier, context, sample size or notes. These details describe the provenance supplied with that observation and may not be available for every record.

Taxonomic sources and biological observations serve different purposes. A source supporting one observation should not automatically be treated as the authority for every fact displayed about a species.

Limitations and corrections

Scientific names, classifications and reported traits can change as research develops. Sources may differ in their coverage, definitions, taxonomic concepts and publication dates. The archive may therefore contain incomplete, outdated or conflicting information.

The Society aims to preserve source attribution where available rather than imply that every record has been independently verified.

To discover, document, classify, and preserve knowledge of the world's flora and fauna, with particular attention given to rare, unusual, and previously undocumented species.

A tradition of inquiry

The Society's presentation draws on the language and visual traditions of nineteenth-century natural-history institutions: field records, taxonomic catalogues, careful observation and the preservation of evidence.

Its historical framing is inspired by the era's spirit of exploration and scientific documentation. The catalogue itself is a modern digital project, designed to bring together taxonomic information, vernacular names and biological observations in one accessible archive.

How the archive is organised

Species records are the archive's primary focus. Each record brings together available identity, descriptive, biological, classification and naming information. Detail and completeness vary according to the underlying sources.

Historical note

The Grand Explorer's Society and its 1887 founding narrative are fictional elements of this project's presentation, not a claim that a historical institution of that name existed. The digital archive was developed as a modern project in 2026.
